Significance

Zechariah's oath-clause and Solomon's charter-clause share a rare word. Luke 1:75 has ἐν ὁσιότητι καὶ δικαιοσύνῃ ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ - "in holiness and righteousness before Him"; 3 Kingdoms 9:4 LXX has ἐν ὁσιότητι καρδίας καὶ ἐν εὐθύτητι... ἐνώπιον ἐμοῦ - "in holiness of heart and in uprightness... before Me." ὁσιότης occurs only twice in the New Testament (here and Ephesians 4:24) and is uncommon in the Greek Old Testament, so its coincidence with ἐνώπιον is worth recording - though as an echo of covenant-charter language rather than a marked citation, which is why the Reference Type has been set down from Allusion to Echo. What makes the pairing worth keeping is the reversal in how the same words function. At 1 Kings 9:4-5 they are a condition laid on Solomon: if you walk before Me in holiness of heart, then I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever. He did not, and the books that follow are the long accounting of it - the Solomon narrative ends with high places for Chemosh and Molech (1 Kings 11:7). At Luke 1:74-75 the same words are the content of a gift: God grants "deliverance from hostile hands, that we may serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our lives." The clause has moved from the protasis to the apodosis. It is no longer what we must produce to secure the covenant but what the covenant produces in us, and the reason given is not our resolve but "the oath He swore to our father Abraham" (1:73) - a promise with no if attached. Typology is not what is operating here; there is no figure foreshadowing another, only a demand that becomes a grant, and the methods have been reset accordingly. The savoring lies in two words: "without fear." Solomon served under a suspended sentence. In Christ the same holiness is asked and given in one act, so that standing before God stops being a test and becomes the thing we were made for.
