Luke 21:20-24BSB

But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, you will know that her desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country stay out of the city. For these are the days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. How miserable those days will be for pregnant and nursing mothers! For there will be great distress upon the land and wrath against this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive into all the nations. And Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

Significance

The pairing named in this file's title is mis-anchored. Luke 21:20-24 describes Jerusalem encircled by armies, flight to the mountains, "days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written," great distress upon the land, the sword, deportation into all the nations, and the city trodden down by the Gentiles until their times are fulfilled. Amos 8:9 announces a cosmic sign — "I will make the sun go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the daytime." There is no darkness in Luke 21:20-24 and no cosmic sign of any kind; the pericope is deliberately terrestrial and military. The Amos oracle contributes nothing to it.

Amos 8:9 does have a home in Luke, but it is Luke 23:44-45, where the sun is darkened at midday over the cross. Likewise Joel 2:30-31, listed second here, is the intertext of Luke 21:25-26 ("signs in the sun and moon and stars") — the next pericope, already carried by its own pair on Luke 21:25. Both entries appear to have migrated backward from adjacent verses.

The genuine scriptural substructure of Luke 21:20-24 lies elsewhere and is already documented in this folder. "Days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written" draws on the prophetic day-of-reckoning formula (Hosea 9:7, carried by its own pair on Luke 21:22). "Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles" draws on Zechariah 12:3 together with Daniel's trampled sanctuary, carried by its own pair on Luke 21:24. Behind both stands the covenant-curse catalogue of Deuteronomy 28:49-52, where siege, famine, the sword, and scattering "among all the nations" are the stipulated consequences of covenant breach — precisely the "all that is written" Jesus says these days fulfill. Amos 8:9 is not part of that substructure.

Recommended disposition: withdraw the Amos 8:9 pairing for this passage. Retained here without deletion for judgment.
