Joel 2:30BSB
I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke.
John declares, "I baptize you with water, but One more powerful than I will come... He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire" (Luke 3:16). The double baptism "with the Holy Spirit and with fire" reaches back to Joel's promise of the Day of the LORD, when God says, "I will pour out My Spirit on all people" (Joel 2:28) amid "wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke" (Joel 2:30). Joel had joined the outpouring of the Spirit to the fire of judgment, and John holds the two together: the Coming One will drench his people in the promised Spirit and consume the chaff with unquenchable fire (Luke 3:17). The method is Promise-Fulfillment — the Spirit Joel foretold would be poured out is the Spirit the Messiah bestows, fulfilled when the tongues of fire rest on the church at Pentecost (Acts 2:16-21, which quotes Joel directly). This is the new covenant taking effect: the Spirit given not to a few prophets but to all God's people, constituting them as a Spirit-indwelt community. The fire cuts two ways, and that is the mercy of it — the same Christ who will baptize in fire came first to be baptized into judgment himself, so that those who receive his Spirit receive the refining fire as purification rather than destruction, and are made to want the God who now dwells within them.
