When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as He was praying, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in a bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.
I will proclaim the decree spoken to Me by the LORD: "You are My Son; today I have become Your Father.
Significance
At Jesus' baptism "the Holy Spirit descended on Him in a bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: 'You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased'" (Luke 3:21-22). Two Old Testament streams converge. The heavenly word takes up the royal decree of Psalm 2:7, "You are My Son; today I have become Your Father," identifying Jesus as the enthroned Davidic King and, beyond him, the beloved Son himself. And the visible descent of the Spirit answers the prophetic hope that the Coming One would be anointed with God's own Spirit — the Spirit Joel promised God would "pour out... on all people" (Joel 2:28) rests first, and without measure, on the Son who will pour it out on the rest. The method is Promise-Fulfillment: the sonship Israel and her king held only in shadow (Israel "My firstborn son," the Davidic king "My son") is now spoken over the true Son, and the Spirit promised for the last days descends to inaugurate his ministry. This is the Sonship thread reaching its source: not a son by adoption or office who could fail, but the eternal, beloved Son in whom the Father is well pleased before he has done a single work — the ground of the adoption into which all who are baptized into him are brought, made sons in the Son and given his Spirit as the seal of it.
