Earlier text

Daniel 7:13-14BSB

In my vision in the night I continued to watch, and I saw One like the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His presence. And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship, that the people of every nation and language should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and His kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

Significance

The pairing named in this file's title does not hold. Luke 9:26 reads: "If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels." 2 Kings 2:11 describes Elijah's departure — a chariot of fire and horses of fire separating him from Elisha, and Elijah going up into heaven in a whirlwind. The two verses share no vocabulary and no subject. Luke 9:26 is about a future coming in glory with angels; 2 Kings 2:11 is about a past going in a whirlwind with horses. One is arrival, the other departure; one has angels, the other has fiery cavalry. The two supporting entries are further off still: 1 Kings 6:1 is a construction date, and 1 Kings 19:8 is a journey to Horeb.

The text Luke 9:26 actually stands on is Daniel 7:13-14, and the identification is not in doubt. Three elements of the verse come straight from that vision: the title "Son of Man," the coming in glory, and the conferral of that glory by the Father — "one like a Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven... and He was given dominion, glory, and kingship." Luke's Gospel makes the dependence explicit twice more in contexts that settle the reading: at Luke 21:27, "they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory," and at Luke 22:69 in the Sanhedrin, where the Danielic claim is what secures the verdict. The holy angels of Luke 9:26 correspond to the thousands upon thousands attending the Ancient of Days in Daniel 7:10. A pair for Luke 21:27 and Daniel 7:13 already exists in this folder.

Recommended disposition: withdraw the 2 Kings 2:11 pairing along with the two 1 Kings entries, and re-anchor to Daniel 7:13-14. Retained here without deletion for judgment.
