Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove and resting on Him. I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is He who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD.
Significance
In Isaiah 42:1 YHWH presents His Servant — "My Chosen One, in whom My soul delights. I will put My Spirit on Him" (nātattî rûḥî ʿālâw) — the Spirit-endowment that inaugurates the Servant's justice-bringing vocation; the cognate Davidic oracle of Isaiah 11:2 specifies that this Spirit rests (nûaḥ) upon Him. John the Baptist's testimony recasts that prophecy as eyewitness fulfillment: "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove and resting on Him… The man on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is He who will baptize with the Holy Spirit… this is the Son of God." The Johannine accent falls on the Spirit's remaining/abiding (Gk. μένω) — not a transient prophetic afflatus but the permanent anointing Isaiah promised, marking Jesus as the Spirit-anointed Servant arrived in history. This is Promise-Fulfillment, not a type of the person: John is not a type escalated to an antitype but a witness identifying the very figure Isaiah announced — the Servant on whom God's Spirit rests — within the longitudinal Spirit-on-Messiah trajectory (Isa 11:2 → 42:1 → 61:1) that culminates here. The link is Allusion rather than quotation: John echoes the Servant-anointing pattern and the Father's "Chosen One"/"Son of God" identification without citing Isaiah verbatim. The telos: the Spirit that rests on this Servant rests to be given — He "will baptize with the Holy Spirit" — so that beholding the Beloved on whom the Spirit abides is the doorway to receiving Him, the delight of the Father becoming the delight, and the indwelling life, of all who believe.
