Significance

In 2 Samuel 7:14 the LORD promised David a son whose throne would stand forever: "I will be his Father, and he will be My son." Psalm 2 joins the same two ideas, the King installed on Zion and the decree "You are My Son" (2:6-7). Nathanael's confession in John 1:49, "You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!", pairs the same two titles, sonship (huios, G5207) and kingship (basileus, G935), as the promise to David pairs a father-son bond with an everlasting kingdom. The tie is clear: a confession built from Davidic categories, not a quotation. Nathanael says more than he knows, and Jesus answers that he will "see greater things than these" (1:50), heaven opened over the Son of Man (1:51). The promise to David added, "But My loving devotion will never be removed from him" (7:15). In the Son whom Nathanael confesses, that unfailing love comes to rest, and those who believe in Him are drawn into it.
