Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your King comes to you, righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Earlier text
Isaiah 40:9BSB
Go up on a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news. Raise your voice loudly, O Jerusalem, herald of good news. Lift it up, do not be afraid! Say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!”
Earlier text
He ties his donkey to the vine, his colt to the choicest branch. He washes his garments in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes.
Jesus deliberately enacts Zechariah's prophecy of peaceful messianic king. Independent adaptation of LXX/MT: "do not fear" replaces "rejoice greatly" (from Isaiah 40:9); "sitting" not "mounting" (emphasizes regal dignity); "colt of donkey" from Genesis 49:11. Omits "righteous and having salvation, humble"—but still implied. Donkey = peace, humility (contrast war horse). Juxtaposes peace with ultimate victory. Disciples didn't understand until after resurrection (12:16).
