Isaiah 53:1BSB
Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
Isaiah 53:1 opens the fourth Servant Song with a lament over unbelief: "Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?" The arm of the LORD is His saving power, and the scandal is that it appears in a Servant "despised and rejected by men" (53:3). John 12:38 quotes the verse exactly, following the Greek Old Testament's added address "Lord," and introduces it as fulfillment: "This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet." The tie is strong. John has just reported that after "so many signs in their presence, they still did not believe in Him" (12:37). That unbelief is not a defeat of God's plan but the shape Isaiah foretold. John then adds, "Isaiah said these things because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about Him" (12:41): the despised Servant and the glory Isaiah saw are one Person. The arm of the LORD is revealed in Jesus lifted up, and the call is to believe the message rather than love "praise from men" (12:43), finding God's own glory in Him.
