Who has declared this from the beginning, so that we may know, and from times past, so that we may say: ‘He was right’? No one announced it, no one foretold it, no one heard your words.

‘Thus Ezekiel will be a sign for you; you will do everything that he has done. When this happens, you will know that I am the Lord GOD.’
In Isaiah 41:21-26 the LORD puts the idols on trial and demands proof of foresight: "Who has declared this from the beginning, so that we may know, and from times past, so that we may say: 'He was right'?" None can. The LORD alone announces what will happen before it happens, so that His people "may consider and believe Me and understand that I am He" (43:10). In John 13:19 Jesus applies that test to Himself. Having foretold His betrayal from Psalm 41:9, He says, "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it comes to pass, you will believe that I am He." The tie is clear: Isaiah's argument from prediction, joined to the self-designation egō eimi (G1473, G1510) that the Greek Old Testament uses at Isaiah 43:10. Jesus is not a victim caught off guard by Judas. He speaks as the One who knows the end from the beginning, claiming what Isaiah reserved for the LORD alone. That is the comfort of the upper room: the betrayal that looks like collapse was foreknown and embraced by the Lord, so His friends can trust Him when it comes.
