Significance

Farewell setting. Jesus' "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you" (John 14:18) echoes Moses' parting assurance to Israel — "He will never leave you nor forsake you" (Deuteronomy 31:6) — and the same promise renewed to Joshua (Joshua 1:5). In both farewells the departing mediator grounds the people's courage in God's abiding presence; in John the promise is fulfilled in the coming of the Spirit (John 14:16-18, 26). The link runs on the divine-Presence/Paraclete strand — an analogy of farewell-assurance, not a Joshua-office typology — and remains unconfirmed by public-domain commentary (source note above); it is therefore cited as supporting/thematic, not CRITICAL, in TT 085.
