Significance

In Psalm 119:30 the psalmist confesses, "I have chosen the way of truth; I have set Your ordinances before me." The way is a life walked in God's revealed word, and the word rendered "truth" here is ʼemûnâh (H530), faithfulness: a road that holds because God's word holds. The Greek Old Testament renders the phrase with hodos (G3598) and alētheia (G225), the two words Jesus joins in John 14:6: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." The tie is clear in vocabulary, though Jesus does not cite the psalm. What changes is where the way is found. The psalmist chose a path set out in God's ordinances; Jesus says the path is a Person, and its end is the Father's house, "so that you also may be where I am" (14:3). The psalm adds, "You will enlarge my heart" (119:32), and Psalm 16:11 names the road's end: "You will fill me with joy in Your presence." Jesus is both the road and the welcome at its end.
