Significance

John 16:2 belongs to Jesus' forewarning of the disciples' coming persecution: "They will put you out of the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God." The "time is coming" formula echoes the prophetic announcement of appointed days — Isaiah's "the days are coming" (Isaiah 39:6) — by which the LORD names in advance what He will bring to pass, so that when it arrives His people recognize His hand rather than being overthrown by it. The deeper and more terrible echo is Isaiah 66:5, where those who cast out and revile the faithful do so claiming to honor God: the persecutor mistakes his zeal for worship. This pattern of God's servants hated by the very people who profess to serve God converges on Christ Himself, condemned as a blasphemer by the devout. Jesus forewarns His own precisely so their faith will not fail — "so that when their hour comes, you will remember that I told you" (16:4) — turning coming grief into proof of His foreknowledge and mastery. The telos is not the warning but the One who gives it: Christ so possesses the future that even the disciples' suffering is folded into His purpose, and the forewarned believer clings not to circumstances but to the Lord who saw it all and remains sovereign over it.
