Isaiah 61:1-3BSB

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of our God's vengeance, to comfort all who mourn, to console the mourners in Zion—to give them a crown of beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and a garment of praise for a spirit of despair. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.

as the days on which the Jews gained rest from their enemies and the month in which their sorrow turned to joy and their mourning into a holiday. He wrote that these were to be days of feasting and joy, of sending gifts to one another and to the poor.

Significance

OT: God can "turn mourning into gladness," give "comfort and joy instead of sorrow" (Jeremiah 31:13; Isaiah 61:1-3). Purim celebrates "sorrow turned into joy" (Esther 9:22). Woman in labor image EXTREMELY common in prophetic OT, frequently applies to coming of end-time salvation through Messiah. Day of Lord regularly portrayed as "time of distress" (Daniel 12:1; Zephaniah 1:14-15). Second Temple Judaism coined phrase "birth pains of the Messiah" for tribulation period preceding final consummation (1QH XI, 8-12; cf. Revelation 12:2-5; Brownlee).
