Isaiah 9:6-7BSB

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from that time and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.

Significance

In Isaiah 42:8, right after presenting His Servant, the LORD guards His uniqueness: "I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory to another or My praise to idols." Isaiah 48:11 says it again. In John 17:1 Jesus prays, "Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son may glorify You," and in 17:5 He asks for "the glory I had with You before the world existed." John does not cite Isaiah, so the tie is quiet in words but clear in substance: the request for glory (doxazō, G1392; Isaiah's kâbôwd, H3519, rendered doxa, G1391) can only be made in light of it. If the LORD gives His glory to no other, then the Son who receives it is no other; He shares the glory the Father has always had. And that glory has a gracious purpose: authority "over all people, so that He may give eternal life to all those You have given Him" (17:2), the life of knowing "the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent" (17:3).
