Earlier text

Deuteronomy 15:19BSB

You must set apart to the LORD your God every firstborn male produced by your herds and flocks. You are not to put the firstborn of your oxen to work, nor are you to shear the firstborn of your flock.

Significance

Anticipates commissioning in 20:21. Just as Jesus "set apart" and sent, so disciples set apart to be sent. Jesus' relationship with Father = pattern for disciples' relationship to Jesus as sender (Köstenberger 1998b). Partial OT parallel: Moses consecrated by God (Sirach 45:4) in order to consecrate others as priests (Exodus 28:41). Jesus' self-sacrifice also reminiscent of OT "setting apart" sacrificial animals (Deuteronomy 15:19; Michaels).
