Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in His hands? Who has bound up the waters in His cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is the name of His Son—surely you know!
In Proverbs 30 Agur confesses he has "no knowledge of the Holy One" (30:3), then asks what no human can answer: "Who has ascended to heaven and come down?" and "What is His name, and what is the name of His Son—surely you know!" (30:4). The point is human limitation: heavenly wisdom must come from God's own word (30:5). John 3:13 answers with the same pair of verbs, anabainō (G305) and katabainō (G2597), found in the Greek of Proverbs 30:4: "No one has ascended into heaven except the One who descended from heaven—the Son of Man." The tie is clear, a verbal echo rather than a quotation. Jesus is speaking to "Israel's teacher" (3:10), who cannot grasp "heavenly things" (3:12). Agur was right that no one has climbed up to bring heaven down; but One has come down. He will be "lifted up" (3:14) so "that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life" (3:15). What no seeker could reach, God has given: "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son" (3:16).
