Malachi 3:1BSB
"Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. Then the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple—the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight—see, He is coming," says the LORD of Hosts.
Malachi 3:1 answers a weary people who asked where the God of justice was: "Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. Then the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple." The messenger goes first; the One who follows is the Lord Himself, "the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight." In John 3:28 the Baptist reminds his disciples, "I am not the Christ, but am sent ahead of Him." The tie is clear: the verb of sending (apostellō, G649; Malachi's shâlach, H7971) and the place "ahead of" the coming One restate Malachi's pattern in the Baptist's own words. He then speaks as the bridegroom's friend who "is overjoyed to hear the bridegroom's voice" (3:29), and concludes, "He must increase; I must decrease" (3:30). The forerunner's work ends in gladness, not rivalry. Malachi's Lord comes to His people as their Bridegroom, the One "from above" who "is above all" (3:31), and the Baptist's joy is complete because he has heard His voice.
