Earlier text
Daniel 12:2BSB
And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, but others to shame and everlasting contempt.
Daniel 12:2 is the Old Testament's clearest word on bodily resurrection: "And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, but others to shame and everlasting contempt." It comes in a time of unmatched distress, when everyone "whose name is found written in the book" will be delivered (12:1). John 5:28-29 takes up the same two-way outcome: "all who are in their graves will hear His voice and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment." The tie is clear: the sleepers in their graves, the awakening, and the division into life and judgment follow Daniel, whose Greek text has zōē aiōnios (G2222, G166), eternal life. What John adds is the voice that wakes the dead. It is "His voice," the Son's, who has life in Himself (5:26). And the hour has already begun: "the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live" (5:25). The life Daniel saw at the end is given now to all who hear Him.
