I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.
When the temple crowd marvels that Jesus teaches "without having studied" (John 7:15), He answers by locating the source of His teaching outside Himself: "My teaching is not My own; it comes from Him who sent Me" (John 7:16). The original promise of Deut 18:18 defined the prophet-like-Moses precisely by this derivative speech: "I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him." The defining mark of the true Mosaic prophet is not original genius but commissioned utterance — he speaks not his own word but the word God has placed in his mouth, and obedience to him is obedience to God (Deut 18:15, 19). Jesus's self-description reactivates that very commissioning frame: His teaching is not His own (Greek ouk emē) but belongs to Him who sent Me (tou pempsantos me), the same words-in-his-mouth dynamic He states more explicitly at John 12:49 ("I have not spoken on My own… the Father… has given Me a commandment, what to say and what to speak"). The Connection Method is Promise-Fulfillment carrying the prophetic-office typology, not bare analogy: this is not Jesus resembling a prophet but the eschatological Prophet whom Deut 18 forward-lookingly promised now standing in the temple, speaking the Father's words — the Mosaic succession reaching its singular referent. The telos: the One who claims no word of His own is therefore the One in whom we hear the Father Himself perfectly and finally (Heb 1:1-2), so that to receive His teaching is to receive God's own voice undimmed. To behold Christ here is to find Him supremely desirable — the Prophet greater than Moses whose every word is the Father's, the living end of the long mediation Israel begged for at Horeb, now offered as the One whose words are life.
