Significance

Peter's vision gathers "all kinds of four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth, as well as birds of the air" (Acts 10:12) — the very taxonomy of the creation and flood narratives, where the creatures come to Noah "to be kept alive" according to their kinds (Genesis 6:20; cf. 1:24; 9:2). But where those texts and the Levitical code that followed divided the animals into clean and unclean, the sheet lowered from heaven presents them together and undivided, and the voice commands Peter to kill and eat without distinction. The connection is one of contrast within continuity: the same creatures God once sorted and preserved He now declares clean together, signaling that the dietary boundary which had walled Israel off from the nations has reached its appointed end. The vision is not finally about food but about people — God shows Peter that he should call no man impure or unclean (Acts 10:28) — as the wall of holiness that guarded the covenant people opens to embrace the Gentiles in Christ.
