Earlier text
In that dream the angel of God said to me, 'Jacob!' And I replied, 'Here I am.'
Cornelius's "clear vision of an angel of God who came to him and said, 'Cornelius!'" (Acts 10:3) stands in a long line of divine self-disclosures in which God addresses His servants by name through an angel in a vision or dream — as "the angel of God said to me, 'Jacob!' And I replied, 'Here I am'" (Genesis 31:11). The pattern belongs to the unfolding history of revelation: the same personal God who spoke long ago to the fathers breaks in to direct His purposes and is met with reverent fear. Here the ancient mode of angelic address is bent toward a new end — not the founding of the patriarchal family, but the opening of the covenant to the Gentiles through the gospel of the risen Christ.
