Significance

"[God] welcomes those from every nation who fear Him and do what is right" (Acts 10:35). Peter sums up acceptable devotion in the very terms Moses set before Israel: "what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God by walking in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart" (Deuteronomy 10:12; cf. Psalms 15:2). The fear of God and the doing of righteousness are, by analogy, the marks of the true worshiper in every age. Peter's point is not that Gentiles are saved by sincerity apart from Christ — the very next verses press the gospel of peace through Jesus and forgiveness of sins through His name (Acts 10:36, 43) — but that God-fearing reverence is no monopoly of Israel, and wherever it is genuine God is drawing that person to His Son. The old covenant's summons to fear and obey is honored, not annulled, as the gospel goes to the nations.
