Significance

"He has sent this message to the people of Israel, proclaiming the gospel of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all" (Acts 10:36). Peter's summary is saturated with Isaiah's herald-oracle: "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, 'Your God reigns!'" (Isaiah 52:7; cf. 61:1). What Isaiah announced to exiles as the coming reign of God, Peter declares fulfilled in Jesus, the one anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power who is now "Lord of all." The promised proclamation of peace has arrived in a person: the reign of God that Isaiah saw returning to Zion is the lordship of the risen Christ, and its peace is reconciliation with God offered now to Jew and Gentile alike. The herald's beautiful feet find their fulfillment in the apostolic mission that reaches even to Cornelius's house.
