Significance

"God raised Him up on the third day and caused Him to be seen" (Acts 10:40). The apostolic confession that Christ was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:4) answers Israel's hope of national revival: "After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will raise us up, that we may live in His presence" (Hosea 6:2). These are Israel's own words in its call to return (6:1-3), not a divine oracle, and YHWH answers them with a rebuke of its fleeting loyalty (6:4). What a chastened Israel hoped for — resurrection-life after judgment — is realized first and representatively in Israel's Messiah, the true Israel, whose third-day rising is the firstfruits of the resurrection He shares with His people. The corporate hope is fulfilled in the individual, and through Him restored to the many: because He was raised, those who believe are raised with Him to live in His presence. The connection reads Hosea's third-day hope as brought, through corporate solidarity, to its head and its fulfillment in the risen Lord.
