Significance

"They heard them speaking in tongues and exalting God" (Acts 10:46). The magnifying or exalting of God is the native language of Israel's worship — "may those who love Your salvation always say, 'Let God be magnified!'" (Psalms 70:4; cf. 34:3). The Gentile believers, filled with the Spirit, spontaneously take up the very praise the Psalms had taught the covenant people, evidence that the same God is now worshiped by the nations in the same terms. The connection is a shared vocabulary of praise rather than a developed trajectory; its force is confirmatory — the Gentiles' Spirit-given exaltation of God is the audible sign that they have received what Israel received, and that the wall between them has fallen in Christ.
