Significance

"When news of this reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, they sent Barnabas to Antioch" (Acts 11:22). Luke's phrasing follows a Scripture-shaped idiom in which a report is carried and stirs a response, as when Abimelech "described to them all that had happened, and the men were terrified" (Genesis 20:8; cf. Isaiah 5:9). The turn of speech marks the continuity of the church's story with Israel's. The connection is a matter of septuagintal style rather than theological trajectory; its modest significance is that the report of God's work among the Gentiles travels, and the mother church responds by sending Barnabas — the gospel's advance drawing the whole people of God into its widening circle.
