Significance

Paul begins his synagogue sermon with the God who acts: "The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers. He made them into a great people during their stay in Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He led them out of that land" (Acts 13:17). The language is the exodus confession — God's promise that "because of My mighty hand he will let the people go" (Exodus 6:1), and His outstretched arm of redemption (Deuteronomy 4:37; Psalms 136:12). Paul rehearses this founding deliverance as the first movement of a single story that runs through wilderness, conquest, judges, and David to its climax in Jesus. The connection is redemptive-historical: the exodus is not merely past event but paradigm — God's saving act that grounds the covenant and prefigures the greater redemption. As the LORD once brought Israel out of Egypt to serve Him, so now He brings the true Israel out of bondage to sin through the risen Christ, that His people, delivered, might worship Him.
