Significance

Paul's summary "After removing Saul, He raised up David as their king" (Acts 13:22) alludes to the rejection oracle of 1 Samuel 15:23 — "Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has rejected you as king." The verse supplies the removal pole of Paul's sequence, not its quoted wording: the words Paul actually cites ("I have found David son of Jesse a man after My own heart") are a composite drawn from Psalm 89:20 and 1 Samuel 13:14 (see those pairs). The connection is therefore Contrast — Saul rejected for rejecting God's word, David chosen as the man after God's own heart — and the contrast is load-bearing for Paul's argument: the removal of the people's king is the redemptive-historical clearing that makes room for the promised king from whose line God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus (Acts 13:23).
