"Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. Then the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple—the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight—see, He is coming," says the LORD of Hosts. But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He will be like a refiner's fire, like a launderer's soap.
"Before the arrival of Jesus, John preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel" (Acts 13:24). Paul's placement of John as the immediate forerunner rests on Malachi's promise: "Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. Then the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple" (Malachi 3:1-2; cf. 4:5). John is the promised messenger, and his coming before the face of the Lord's advent marks the turning of the ages. The connection is promise-fulfillment: the last of the prophets foretold a preparer, and Jesus follows exactly as announced. The forerunner's baptism of repentance readies Israel for the One who is greater — the Lord suddenly come to His temple, the Messenger of the covenant in whom the people were to delight — so that John's whole ministry points away from himself to Christ.
