Significance

"It is to us that this message of salvation has been sent" (Acts 13:26). Paul's phrase, the word of this salvation sent, takes up a rich Old Testament motif of God's sent, effectual word — "He sent forth His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit" (Psalms 107:20). God's word does not return empty but accomplishes His saving purpose (Isaiah 55:11). By analogy, the gospel Paul proclaims is that same living word now sent to the sons of Abraham and to God-fearing Gentiles alike. The connection carries the weight of the sermon: the word that once healed and rescued Israel has come near in its fullness, for the Word Himself has been sent — Christ, in whom salvation is not merely announced but embodied and given to all who believe.
