Significance

"The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning Him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath" (Acts 13:27). Their rejection is itself the fulfillment of Scripture, above all Isaiah's portrait of the Servant "despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief... and we esteemed Him not" (Isaiah 53:3). The very blindness that condemned Him was foretold, and their condemnation accomplished the redemptive plan they failed to perceive. The connection is promise-fulfillment of the deepest kind: God works His saving purpose through, not around, human sin — the stone the builders rejected becoming the cornerstone (Psalms 118:22). What men meant as repudiation, God meant as the atoning death of His Servant, so that the rejected One is precisely the One pierced for our transgressions. Their unwitting fulfillment of prophecy is the measure of God's sovereign grace over the cross.
