Significance

"They are now His witnesses to our people" (Acts 13:31). The role of the witness is deeply rooted in Deuteronomy, where God summons, "I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you this day" (Deuteronomy 4:26), and requires two or three witnesses to establish a matter — the legal safeguard of truth in Israel. The apostles who saw the risen Christ for many days stand as the appointed witnesses to His resurrection, their testimony grounding the church's proclamation. The connection is a shared concept — the biblical weight of the credible witness — rather than a developed trajectory. Its significance is evidential and theological: the resurrection is not a private inference but a publicly attested event, sealed by named witnesses, so that faith rests on the sure testimony of those who saw the Lord alive (cf. Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 15:5-8).
