Significance

Paul closes with a warning from the prophets: "Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish! For I am doing a work in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you" (Acts 13:41, citing Habakkuk 1:5). In Habakkuk the incredible work was God's raising up the Chaldeans to judge a complacent Judah; Paul applies it by analogy to a greater and more incredible work — the salvation accomplished in the crucified and risen Christ, and the peril of despising it. The connection is analogical: an old oracle of astonishing divine action, refused to the nation's ruin, becomes a summons to Paul's hearers not to repeat the sin of unbelief. The work now is the gospel itself, and to scoff at it is to perish; the warning presses the offer of forgiveness (Acts 13:38-39) home with prophetic urgency, that they might believe the unbelievable grace of God in His Son.
