Paul opens his Areopagus address by naming God as "the God who made the world and everything in it," the "Lord of heaven and earth" who "does not live in temples made by human hands" (Acts 17:24) — a compressed confession of Genesis 1:1 and the whole OT creation faith (Exodus 20:11; Isaiah 42:5; Psalm 146:6). Against Athenian religion, the Maker of all cannot be housed or supplied by his creatures. Paul thus builds his gospel on the bedrock of creation: the God who is coming to judge, and who raised Jesus (Acts 17:31), is none other than the God who spoke the cosmos into being. To know this Creator rightly is to abandon idols and, at last, to behold him in the risen Man he has appointed — the one through whom all things were made (John 1:3), in whom the Creator is finally seen.
