Significance

Paul clinches his argument with the words of the Greek poets, which nonetheless speak a deeper truth: "For in Him we live and move and have our being... We are His offspring" (Acts 17:28). That humanity is God's offspring is grounded in Genesis, where God "created man in His own image" (Genesis 1:27), giving every person a kinship to the Creator that no idol shares. Paul presses the point in the next verse — being God's offspring, made in his likeness, we must not imagine the divine is like gold or stone shaped by human craft. The image-bearing that makes humanity God's offspring finds its truth and its repair in Christ, "the image of the invisible God" (Colossians 1:15), through whom the marred image is remade in all who behold him (2 Corinthians 3:18).
