Significance

Paul ends at judgment: God "has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the Man He has appointed," giving proof by raising him from the dead (Acts 17:31). The phrase gathers up the Psalms' refrain that God "judges the world with justice" (Psalm 9:8; cf. Psalm 96:13), where Israel's confidence rested on the LORD's coming to set all things right. What the psalmists said of God, Paul now announces will be executed through a Man — the risen Jesus — so that the OT's promise of righteous judgment is fulfilled and personalized in Christ the appointed Judge. The resurrection is God's public pledge of this coming assize; and the same risen Judge is even now "a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble" (Psalm 9:9) for all who repent and take shelter in him.
