Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."
In a night vision the Lord assures Paul, "Do not be afraid; keep on speaking; do not be silent. For I am with you and no one will lay a hand on you" (Acts 18:9-10), addressing his apostle in the very manner in which he commissioned Moses and Joshua. The promise of God's presence answered Moses at the bush (Exodus 3:12); the charge to Joshua was, "Do not be afraid... for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9); and the word to exiles ran, "Do not fear, for I am with you" (Isaiah 41:10). Paul stands in that long line of the fearful-but-accompanied, sent into danger with the same divine presence. The promise finds its deepest ground in Christ, the true Immanuel, God with us, whose parting word is, "I am with you always" (Matthew 28:20) — so that the missionary's courage rests not on safety but on the abiding presence of the risen Lord.
