Acts 2:24-28BSB

But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for Him to be held in its clutches. David says about Him: ‘I saw the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will dwell in hope, because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the paths of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence.’

Significance

Peter declares that God raised Jesus, “freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for Him to be held in its clutches” (Acts 2:24). The word rendered “agony” (odines) is the language of birth-pangs, lying behind the psalmist’s “cords of death” and behind the counting of the months of travail until the young are brought forth (Job 39:2). Death is imaged as a labor that cannot but issue in life: the grave, straining to hold the Author of life, is forced to deliver Him up. Peter grounds this in David’s confidence that God “will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor let Your Holy One see decay” (Psalm 16:10; Acts 2:27) — words David could not speak of himself but the risen Christ fulfills. The resurrection is thus the firstborn birth out of death, the pledge that all who are His will likewise be brought forth from the grave into unending life.
