Significance

Luke notes that dwelling in Jerusalem were “God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven” (Acts 2:5) — the diaspora regathered for the feast, a living map of the scattered covenant people. The phrase “under heaven” recalls the sweep of the nations (Deuteronomy 2:25) and Joel’s summons to “all who dwell in the land” to hear the word of the LORD (Joel 1:2). The detail is not incidental to Luke’s design: the very people scattered among the nations in judgment are gathered to hear, each in his own tongue, “the wonders of God” (2:11). Redemptive history turns here — the ingathering of dispersed Israel becomes the launching-point for the gospel’s outward movement to “the ends of the earth” (1:8). What began as the feast-pilgrimage of a scattered people becomes the first act of the nations’ ingathering into the one people of the risen Christ.
