Significance

Paul commits the elders "to God and to the word of His grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all who are sanctified" (Acts 20:32). The language of a divinely-given inheritance reaches back to the promise to Abraham — "I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess" (Genesis 15:7) — and Israel's entry into its allotted land. What was land is now transposed: the inheritance is fellowship among all who are sanctified, the people of God themselves as God's portion. The Abrahamic promise of an inheritance is not cancelled but deepened and widened in Christ, in whom believers obtain an inheritance imperishable and kept in heaven (Ephesians 1:11; 1 Peter 1:4) — the land-promise arriving at its true home in the God who is himself the portion of his people.
