Significance

The risen Lord promises Paul, "I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them" (Acts 26:17). The pledge of rescue echoes Israel's prayer, "Save us, O God of our salvation; gather and deliver us from the nations" (1 Chronicles 16:35), and still more the assurance to Jeremiah at his call, "Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you" (Jeremiah 1:8). The God who guards his sent ones amid hostile peoples now guards his apostle, so that the mission cannot be cut short until its purpose is complete. The deliverance is not from suffering but through it, for the sending is the point — Paul is preserved to preach. This is the pattern of Christ's servants, kept by the Lord until their work is finished, that the light might reach the nations to whom they are sent.
