Significance

Peter calls his hearers to “repent... and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3:19-20). The phrase “times of refreshing” evokes the prophetic hope of Isaiah 32:15 — the day when “the Spirit is poured out on us from on high,” when the wilderness becomes a fruitful field and righteousness dwells in the land. What Isaiah foresaw as the renewal of a parched people by the outpoured Spirit, Peter announces as now available in the risen Christ: repentance opens the way to the Spirit’s refreshing presence. The “refreshing” is not merely relief but the inbreaking of the new-covenant age of the Spirit, the firstfruits of the full restoration of all things (3:21). The barren land of a guilty conscience is watered from on high; the God whose presence the sinner once dreaded becomes the source of refreshing to the repentant, through the Servant God has raised and will send again.
