Cush, Put, and Lud, and all the various peoples, as well as Libya and the men of the covenant land, will fall with Egypt by the sword.
Peter presses his hearers’ privileged standing: “You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your seed all the families of the earth will be blessed’” (Acts 3:25). The phrase “sons of the covenant” (huioi tes diathekes) is a Semitic idiom for those who belong to and inherit a covenant — the same construction underlying the Greek Old Testament’s “sons of the covenant land” (Ezekiel 30:5). Peter’s point is that the Jewish hearers stand first in line to receive the covenant blessing now realized in Christ: the promise to Abraham always aimed at “all the families of the earth,” yet it comes “to you first” (3:26). Covenant sonship, however, is no ground for presumption; it is a summons to receive the covenant’s true heir. To be a son of the covenant is to be an heir of the promise fulfilled in Jesus, in whom the blessing pledged to Abraham reaches the world — beginning with the very people who crucified Him.
