Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and You have not delivered Your people in any way.”
At the temple gate Peter heals with a word: “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk!” (Acts 3:6). This first healing “in the name of Jesus” enacts what Joel promised and Peter had just preached: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Joel 2:32; Acts 2:21). The astonishing move is that the name once reserved for the LORD is now the name of Jesus — to call on Him is to call on God. The healing is a sign of the greater salvation the name brings: as the lame man is raised up to walk, so all who call on Jesus are raised from the death of sin. Peter is careful to disclaim any power of his own; it is “the name” and “faith in that name” that made the man strong (3:16). The episode reveals the exalted Christ still at work through His name, saving and restoring those who call on Him — the divine name now made near and mighty in the risen Jesus.
