Allusion

Later text

Acts 4:27BSB

In fact, this is the very city where Herod and Pontius Pilate conspired with the Gentiles and the people of Israel against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed.

Earlier text

Isaiah 61:1BSB

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners,

Significance

When the church names Jesus "Your holy servant... whom You anointed," it reads Him as the Spirit-anointed one of Isaiah 61:1 — "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor." Jesus had claimed exactly this text as fulfilled in Himself at Nazareth (Luke 4:18-21), and His anointing at the Jordan sealed Him for the Servant's mission. The title "Anointed" (Christos) is thus not a bare label but the fulfillment of the Servant/Jubilee promise. Christ-terminus: the One anointed to proclaim liberty is Himself the liberty He proclaims; the poor, the captive, and the broken behold in Him the favor of the LORD made visible — a Savior anointed not merely to announce good news but to be it.
