All these men of war, arrayed for battle, came to Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel. And all the rest of the Israelites were of one mind to make David king.
Luke describes the believers as "one in heart and soul" (kardia kai psychē mia), a phrase that gathers up the Shema's summons to love the LORD "with all your heart and with all your soul" (Deut 6:5) and Israel's ideal unity in coming "with one heart" to make David king (1 Chr 12:38). Whole-hearted love for God, poured out by the Spirit, produces a community whose members hold nothing back from one another. The vertical devotion of the Shema bears horizontal fruit: they share everything in common. Christ-terminus: this unity is not native to fallen humanity but the fruit of the risen Christ's grace resting on them all (v33) — a first taste of the new-covenant heart, the law of love written within, and a preview of the one flock of the one Shepherd.
