Significance

Luke's summary that "There were no needy ones among them" deliberately answers Deuteronomy 15:4, where the LORD promises, in the law of the sabbatical release, that "there will be no poor among you" if Israel obeys. Under the old covenant that ideal was never reached; Israel's history is a record of debt, poverty, and unreleased bondage. Now, in the Spirit-filled community, the promise finds its realization: those who own lands and houses sell them so that no member lacks. Christ-terminus: this generosity is not law-keeping striving but grace overflowing — "abundant grace was upon them all" (v33), the grace of the One who, "though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich" (2 Cor 8:9). The abundance of Christ makes His people open-handed.
