Significance

Hauled before the rulers, elders, and high-priestly family, Peter is "filled with the Holy Spirit" and answers without fear — a living embodiment of the psalmist's confidence that it is "better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes" (Ps 118:9; cf. Ps 146:3, "put not your trust in princes"). The fisherman who once denied Christ before a servant girl now defies the Sanhedrin, because the Spirit gives the boldness the flesh cannot. Christ-terminus: Peter's refuge is not himself but the risen Lord — and within a breath he names Him as the very stone "which was rejected by you, the builders," now become the cornerstone (v11, quoting Ps 118:22). To take refuge in the LORD is now to trust the crucified and vindicated Christ, before whom no earthly power need be feared.
