Significance

Stephen's accusers "set up false witnesses" against him — and in doing so break the very ninth commandment they profess to guard: "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor" (Exod 20:16). They join the ranks of the false witnesses who assailed the righteous sufferer of the Psalms (Ps 27:12) and the liar condemned by wisdom (Prov 14:5). The guardians of the law violate the law to silence a man "full of faith and of the Holy Spirit." Christ-terminus: the pattern is unmistakably that of Jesus' own trial, where "false witnesses" were sought against Him (Matt 26:59-61). The servant is conformed to the Master — falsely accused, radiant with the Spirit, about to behold the exalted Son of Man — so that even the injustice done to Stephen displays the fellowship of Christ's sufferings and the glory that follows.
